Hundred Acre farms Howell Mountain fruit with obsessive attention and polishes it into seamless tannin — black currant and blueberry compote with mint, cigar box and crushed slate. At $425 it is the priciest bottle on this list, but it is the only one that delivers cult-wine polish and mountain structure in the same glass, drinkable tonight or in twenty years.
Taste these together and the AVA stops being a line on a map. Mt. Veeder is the structural one, Howell Mountain the wild one, Diamond Mountain the velvet one — same winemaker, three genuinely different wines.
